St. Michael’s Blue Jags vs. St. Thomas Aquinas Fighting Saints

The Fighting Saints battled hard in their first round of Provincials versus the Blue Jags, coming out strong in the first quarter with a lead of 23-14.

Though STA doesn’t have much height over SMUS (aside from star guard #14), the Saints blocked well in the paint, leading the the Jags by 9 points heading into the second quarter.

For much of second quarter, STA stayed ahead by at least 10, dominating inside the arc. The Saints did, however, incur five fouls which went unanswered by the Jags. They finished the half with a score of 41-26.

Fighting Saints sisters, Jessica Clarke and Rebecca Clarke, both put up their dukes against the Blue Jags. However, Jess received her 4th foul with 7 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, which could have been a game-changer for St. Mike’s.

But with a little luck, and solid defence, the Saints fought through the loss of one of their key players and did not give up the lead at any point of the game.

In the fourth quarter, Clarke (Jess) came back into the game to help solidify a win by blocking and completing two crucial layups.

Effort was shown until the last possesion, with multiple players on both teams diving onto the floor in hopes of keeping the ball. The Jags gave it their all, but in the end, were left black and blue.

Final score: 67-55 for the Fighting Saints.

St. Thomas Aquinas star forward, Gemma Cutler (#11), won POG honours with 17 points.
