Brookswood breaks Oak Bay in first round upset

Brookswood and Oak Bay played in the opening round of the AAA Provincial Championship. The Breakers featured a bevy of talented players, while Brookswood was looking to advance to the next round after finishing seventh in the Fraser Valley Championship.

Oak Bay started to assert itself near the end of the first. They went on a 10-0 run courtesy of three nice plays from #10 Natalie Froese. Brookswood managed to make the hole a bit worse with #6 Jenna Dick hitting a step-back three to cut the lead to 10.

The second quarter was a back and forth affair. Brookswood scored seven straight to limit the lead to three, and then finally took a one point lead halfway through the second. Oak Bay then responded with Elsner finishing off a nice passing play, and then Georgia Alexander getting a put back gave the Breakers a slim lead back. Dick and Knapp answered for Brookswood to give the Bobcats a single point lead before Shafonsky of Oak Bay hit back to back three to give her team the lead.

In the third, Brookswood tied at 47 via a three from Lali. Oak Bay took a three point lead later in the frame, but Dick scored on back to back fast breaks to give her team the lead. The Bobcats limited Oak Bay to just ten points in the quarter.

The fourth quarter began with an Oak Bay 10-2 run to retake the lead. Katie Elsner hit back to back long twos, and Georgia Alexander muscled her way inside for an easy bucket. But after Alexander missed both of her free throws after being fouled, Brookswood surged ahead thanks in large part to Jenna Dick. She drained a huge corner three late, then drove inside for a lay up to secure her team the lead late. The Bobcats snagged back to back rebounds after free throws to run out the clock and complete the upset.

Georgia Alexander of the Oak Bay Breakers finished with 22 points and 15 rebounds, 13 of which were on the offensive glass. Her teammates Elsner and and Froese both finished with 18 points. For Brookswood, Jenna Dick had 26 points and four steals, while Jenessa Knapp had 16 points.

Brookswood plays tomorrow at 12:00 pm at the Langley Events Centre.
