Day one of Provincials was filled with emotion, intensity and drama. Upsets took place across every tier, and players rose to the occasion, turning in memorable performances.
Here we’ll break down everything you need to know about day one of the BC Senior Boy’s Provincial Championships.
Don’t Call it an Upset!
The Elgin Park Orcas are advancing to the quarter-finals! In a tight game, the Orcas beat the St Georges Saints 67-63.
Orcas forward Adam Olsen turned in a fantastic performance down the stretch to retake the lead with only minutes left.
With fifteen seconds remaining in the game, the Orcas would force a turnover in their defensive end. Shortly after, Elgin Park would have Mattix Harrison at the line converting on both to extend their lead to three.
The thirteenth seed Elgin Park will advance to the next round, but this was not an upset as the Orcas were far better than they were given credit for this season.
The UBC commit, Olsen, would finish the game with thirty points, converting on eight of his nine free throw attempts.
Double Trouble
Grade ten guards Dezi Duchek and Troy Isaacs for the Summerland Rockets lit up the floor in an 85-74 win over Collingwood.
Duchek and Isaacs scored twenty-five points each on the eighth-seed Cavaliers, combining for seven three-pointers.
The future is bright for Summerland as these two continue to develop.
Brentwood College is next for the Rockets, who took a 97-65 victory over Archbishop Carney.
Entering the Eye of the Storm
In an intense, emotional and physical matchup, a winner emerged in an upset as the Westsyde Whundas beat the Southridge Storm 76-69.
The Storm tied the game at sixty-two a piece with eight minutes remaining, but with the minutes dwindling, the Whunda’s intensity and three-point shooting helped them pull away.
With seventeen seconds remaining and the shot clock ticking away, Caleb Gremaud sunk the three-point dagger into Southridge.
The Whundas knocked down four three-pointers in the fourth quarter, proving how dangerous this team can be in the clutch.
Cougars on the Prowl
It was lucky number thirteen today as College Heights upset St. Thomas More in a tight game, winning 62-60.
With the game tied 54-54, Timmy Gonzales knocked down three straight jumpers from beyond the arch. The Knights had control of the game up three with time running out. However, Troy Todoruk would be the unsung hero as his fifth and final three of the night tied the game at sixty.
Bobby Kelly would ice the game for College Heights and complete the comeback, eliminating STM and silencing any doubters ahead of this matchup.
Declawing the Wildcat
Although outnumbered, the Vancouver College fan section brought the infectious energy they’ve come to be known for as of late.
The Fighting Irish avoided an upset by fighting off a tough Tamanawis team, winning 84-69. The Wildcats showed heart and had support from a fiery fan section.
Mikyle Malabuyoc scored a game-high twenty-five demonstrating his ability to get to the basket and score through contact.
Another tough South Fraser team awaits Vancouver College in the quarter-finals; the Fleetwood Park Dragons.
Lightning Strikes
The Langley Christian lightning unleashed a three-point barrage, knocking down twelve from beyond the arch.
Lambrick Park was able to weather the storm and take the lead at multiple points throughout the game. The Lightning would dial it up in the fourth quarter scoring thirty-two points to close out the game 78-74.
Willem Van Huizen scored twenty-one points, and Carter VanderWaarde scored twenty-three and was awarded player of the game for his efforts.
