Argyle complete second half comeback against Yale

Momentum is an often thrown around word when talking about sports. But between the Argyle Pipers and Yale Lions, both teams had truly huge momentum swings that seemed to anoint them winners when they occurred.

To start the game, Argyle came out storming and took a 7-3 lead. However, Yale then went on a 8-0 run, helped out by two big threes from #10. #11 would add another tre, but #13 would drive and get a big bucket. But still, the Pipers were down by seven after the first quarter.

In the second, Argyle came out on a mission, outscoring Yale 7-2 three minutes in. They eventually took the lead from a Georgia Swant three and it looked like momentum was on the side of the Pipers. But then, Draavers hit a three to take back the lead, which started a 9-0 run to end the half.

The second half started with a bang, as a high arcing three from Taya Pankratz put Yale into a double digit lead. Argyle did not quit though. Holt hit a big three and later a put back bucket, and then Ward got into the action with a three as well. That 10-4 run chipped away at Yale’s lead, and heading into the final frame they were only down by five.

That’s when this game got crazy. Camie Ward (#4) hit back to back shots to tie the game for Argyle, then finally took the lead courtesy of Lauren Parr. Georgia Swant then put the team on her back, stealing a pass to set up a teammate and then making a long three of her own to make it an eight point lead. Sapna Deo of Yale made it 59-55, but by that point the momentum was firmly in the Pipers favour. Swant went three for four from the line in the final minute, essentially sealing the game for her team. The game eventually ended 67-62.

Argyle erased a third quarter deficit of 11 points, and outscored Yale 39-26 in the second half. Georgia Swant’s 28 points made up over 40% of her team’s scoring in the game. For Yale, Madison Draavers finished with a double double, scoring 17 points and grabbing 11 boards.

Next for for Argyle is a game against Kelowna tomorrow at 1:45 pm. For Yale, they play Heritage Woods at 8:30 am.
